The International women’s day is a global day dedicated to recognizing and celebrating the social, economic, cultural, and political achievements of women. It is celebrated annually on March 8th. This theme emphasizes the urgency of taking swift and decisive steps to achieve gender equality.
According to the World Economic Forum, at the current rate of progress, it will take until 2158 to reach full gender parity. The theme encourages everyone to step forward in solidarity and support efforts to advance women's rights and opportunities.Looking at the statistics of women in Cameroon who have achieved gender parity:he adolescent birth rate is 2.4 per 1,000 women aged 15–19 as of 2021, down from 3.24 per 1,000 in 2020.As of February 2024, 33.9% of seats in parliament were held by women.Cameroon ranked 97th out of 146 countries in the 2022 World Economic Forum’s Global Gender Gap Index.Women in Cameroon spent 15.8% of their day on unpaid work in 2014.
Globally, some progress on women’s rights has been achieved. In Cameroon, the adolescent birth rate is 2.4 per 1,000 women aged 15–19 as of 2021, down from 3.24 per 1,000 in 2020. As of February 2024, 33.9% of seats in parliament were held by women.However, work still needs to be done in Cameroon to achieve gender equality. 66.7% of legal frameworks that promote, enforce and monitor gender equality under the SDG indicator, with a focus on violence against women, are in place. 29.8% of women aged 20–24 years old who were married or in a union before age 18. In 2018, 22% of women aged 15-49 years reported that they had been subject to physical and/or sexual violence by a current or former intimate partner in the previous 12 months.
Also, women and girls aged 15+ spend 16.7% of their time on unpaid care and domestic work, compared to 4.4% spent by men. Moreover, women of reproductive age (15-49 years) often face barriers with respect to their sexual and reproductive health and rights: despite progress, in 2018, 44.9% of women had their need for family planning satisfied with modern methods.
