ENGAGING YOUNG PEOPLE IN COMBATTING HATE SPEECH
In line with the project "Engaging Young People in Combatting Hate speech and Hate speech Fueled Election violence in the 2025 Presidential Election in Cameroon" a roundtable discussion took place today 19th August, 2025 at the conference hall of the Centre for Human Rights and Democracy in Africa (CHRDA) under the theme "Promoting Social Cohesion and Countering Hate speech in Politically Instrumentalized Spaces". This session had over 25 participants made up of CSO leaders, traditional Leaders, religious leaders, media personnel and influencers. The participants gained insights on basic terminologies such as hate speech and political instrumentalization. Participants also had discussions on the current trends of hate speech in our various communities and also engaged in group activities on the impacts of hate speech on peace, security and trust.
This roundtable discussion comes after a 2 day capacity building workshop on the same theme held in buea. The Centre is invested in follow up of this activity to ensure there is an improved behaviour from youth during the upcoming presidential elections offline and online.
