CHRDA TAKES MENSTRUAL HYGIENE TO ADOLESCENT GIRLS IN BUEA

In celebration of International Menstruation Hygiene Day 2025,the gender department of CHRDA  visited G.S Bonduma on May 22nd for a sensitization campaign with class 6 pupils about menstruation, the menstrual cycle, common symptoms, hygienic practices and proper disposal of used pads.

Menstrual hygiene is a global movement that calls attention to an issue that affects millions of young girls yet too often it is overlooked and misunderstood. Menstruation is normal, natural healthy and it should never be a barrier to education, dignity or opportunity. Unfortunately in many communities menstruation is still surrounded by silence, stigma and minsinformation. Far too many girls miss school, suffer in silence or use unsafe materials simply because they lack access to basic menstrual products or education.

In Cameroon menstruation is often shrouded in silence and stigma. Many girls lack access to basic, menstrual products and education, leading to missed school days and increased vulnerability. Initiatives like the "Menstrual Hygiene Campaign in Schools" aims to educate students and reduce stigma but challenges persist. A survey carried out by CHRDA in 2023 revealed that only 1 out of 20 schools in Fako has basic menstrual hygiene kit in school and some teachers revealed that in case of menstruation in during school periods, girls missed classes because they have to go home and change.

This year's theme "Together for a Period Friendly World" is a powerful call to action. It reminds us that when we break the silence and challenge the stigma,we create a world where every girl feels safe, supported and empowered,no matter the time of the month. The pupils shared their first period stories, ased questions and received a demonstration on how to properly wear pads for maximum comfort.

CHRDA believes in empowering young girls with the knowlege, resources and confidence they need to thrive everyday of the month.
