THE DETAILED HUMAN RIGHTS SITUATION REPORT OF THE NORTH WEST, SOUTH WEST AND FAR NORTH REGIONS OF CAMEROON FOR THE FIRST QUARTER OF THE YEAR 2025 (JANUARY-MARCH)

The month of January witnessed series of human rights violations and abuses that happened especially within the context of the conflict in the North West and South West regions of Cameroon. In the month of January, we witnessed a drop in atrocities by the DSF and an increase in killings and kidnappings by the NSAG though literally low as compared to the last quarter of 2024. The military attack on separatist fighters and on civilians was limited while Separatist fighters carried out an attack targeting state Defence and Security Forces (DSF) as well as civilians either suspected of having ties with the DSF or those accused of not respecting their orders.

Among the most violated rights in January were the right to life, kidnapping and torture.  Separatist fighters stepped up with killings, kidnappings and extortion in the form of ransom payment. The killing of Mr. Teghen Ephraim in Ekona, the C.D.C Assistant Manager of the Mungo Palms Estate on Monday January 20, 2025 was just another targeted attack as separatist fighters claimed that their orders were by passed by the Estate Assistant Manager.

Another targeted killing was by separatist fighters in Manyu division was a deadly attack on DSF that saw the killing of five Defence Security Forces in Akwaya on Friday, January 3, 2025.

These violations are committed in total violation of International Human Rights Law and International Humanitarian Law. Civilians who are not actively participating in hostilities are not to be attacked by both parties to the conflict. CHRDA continues to call for restraint on both camps, a call for a cessation of hostilities and a resolve to engage in meaningful dialogue.
