HUMAN RIGHTS SITUATION OF THE NORTHWEST AND SOUTHWEST REGIONS FOR THE MONTH OF AUGUST 2022
THE HUMAN RIGHTS SITUATION OF THE NORTHWEST AND SOUTHWEST REGIONS FOR THE MONTH OF AUGUST 2022
Like previous months, August was characterized by violence against the population, with multiple attacks recorded against civilians and civilian objects by both government forces and non-state armed groups. The domain of education, which has been under attack since the start of the crisis in 2016, has continued to suffer in hands of both warring parties. Toward the end of August 2022, non-state armed groups operating in the two English-speaking regions made another attempt to enforce a ban on school resumption in the two regions. To realize this objective, they announced a two weeks lockdown and went further to burn down the boys’ dormitory on the campus of PSS Mankon in Bamenda, Northwest Region, on August 22. On the other hand, the Senior Divisional Officer for Boyo, announced the closure of some 27 ‘community schools’ and ‘clandestine schools’ operating in Boyo Division. Some of these schools were alleged to have been created by separatists, whereas some were mission schools. Equally, this month saw multiple other attacks against civilians—including unlawful killings, arbitrary arrest and destruction of property—remain on the rise.
