The month of December 2022 saw more calls for the government of Cameroon to engage in meaningful dialogue to arrive at a sustainable solution to the more than five-year-long crisis in the English-speaking North-West and South-West Regions of Cameroon. Speaking to state media on December 12, 2022, US Ambassador to Cameroon Christopher John Lamora said that using soldiers in the North-West and South-West Regions will not solve the crisis, as the use of force is instead instigating more violence. He called on state authorities to engage in real, honest and open dialogue and urged armed groups to desist from burning schools and preventing children from going to school. He said he has watched disturbing videos of excessive violence which has caused children to drop out of schools, and sparked more displacement as more homes are being razed. He outlined the US’s provision of humanitarian assistance, especially to internally displaced persons (IDPs), through the World Food Program. His declarations came just a few days after some Cameroonian diaspora members based in the US were arrested for purportedly funding “terrorist activities” in Cameroon.
